Learning Beyond the Classroom: Specialists and Afterschool Programs at Terra School

Specialists Who Enrich the Terra Experience

As students settle into their studio routines, we want to highlight an important part of the Terra experience: our incredible specialists, who bring creativity, movement, and exploration into each week.

This year, learners are enjoying:

  • Spanish with Mr. Walter (Primary through High School)

  • Physical Education with Ms. Sandy (Academic Afternoon through High School)

  • Music with Mr. Michael (Montessori)

  • Art with Ms. Emily (Grades 1–12, new this year!)

  • Outdoor Education with Ms. Marika (Academic Afternoon through High School, new this year!)

Each specialist class meets once or twice a week, giving learners the chance to explore new disciplines, build confidence, and connect with the world around them. At Terra, we believe education should engage the whole self—mind and body—and we’re grateful for the talented team who makes learning such a rich experience.

Settling Into Routines and Building Community

The first weeks of school are alive with energy: students are finding their rhythms in the studios, building friendships, and taking ownership of their spaces—from the playgrounds to the Terra Treehouse. It’s inspiring to see learners already embodying the responsibility and independence that make our model so unique.

We’ve also loved connecting with families during carpool. Whether it’s a warm hello or a quick update, these daily touchpoints strengthen the bond between school and home, reminding us that parent partnership is at the heart of Terra.

A Strong Start to the School Year

The school year is officially underway at Terra School at Serenbe, and the first week has been filled with connection, excitement, and new beginnings. Walking through our studios, now buzzing with learners, we’re reminded of the intentional design behind every space—crafted to spark curiosity, foster engagement, and give students a sense of ownership. This environment helps build the security learners need to grow and thrive.

From day one, our campus has been alive with energy. As Brett observed while visiting each studio, the themes of connection, organization, purpose, and community were clear from the very start. Together, we’ve created a special place to be a learner.

First Week Highlights

  • Primary Studios: The first days were a delicate dance of practical life, where small but essential actions—pouring water, moving carefully around a work rug, preparing a snack—became opportunities for concentration and independence. Through this purposeful work, children coordinate mind and body, laying the foundation for future learning.

  • Carpool Moments: A favorite time of day! The first morning brought a few humorous hiccups (families lining up outside the cones instead of inside), but with laughter and good nature, everything quickly smoothed out.

  • Studio Traditions: In Desert Studio, learners kicked off their tradition with a chant: “SPIN THE WHEEL! SPIN THE WHEEL!” Guests were invited into the game of chance, where spins might result in rewards—or a quick burst of jumping jacks or push-ups. These traditions bring joy and community spirit to daily life.

Parent Involvement: PALs Survey

Our Parents as Leaders (PALs) play a key role in strengthening Terra’s community. Families are encouraged to complete the Parent Involvement Survey to share how they’d like to contribute this year.

Parent Education Programs

Parent Education events will begin next month, giving families time to settle into the school year. These programs are designed to inform, connect, and support parents at every stage of child development. Topics will include:

  • Community read discussions (Hidden Potential)

  • Practical parenting topics such as toileting, positive discipline, and navigating cell phones

  • Workshops on self-regulation, digital citizenship, and executive functioning

In addition, PAL will continue to host events and connection points throughout the year.

For planning purposes, two updates have been made to the school calendar:

  • Staff Work Day → Friday, March 20, 2025

  • Spring Parent Conference Day → Monday, April 27, 2025
